How to choose a gym in Milwaukee
September 9, 2026 — Cream City CrossFit
Milwaukee has every kind of gym: standard globo gyms full of machines, boutique studios built around one class format, and coached strength gyms like ours. None of them is “best,” they address different problems. Here is how to figure out which one is yours.
The three kinds of gym
A globo gym membership is access. It rewards people who are motivated, know what to do, and can consistently attend without somebody pushing them. A boutique studio is a single workout, polished. At a gym such as Cream City CrossFit, you pay for the coaching, coach-led classes from expert coaches who make sure you move safely and get the results you came to get.
Questions worth asking anywhere
Ask who notices if you stop showing up. Ask what happens in your first session, a sales pitch, or an actual conversation? Ask how the gym handles someone brand new: is there a real Fundamentals class, or are you dropped straight into a class? Ask if the class is actually coached, or if the coach just reads you the workout and stands on the floor. Ask how big the classes are, are you just a number in a really large class without any individual coaching? And read the Google reviews for the words people repeat, because members tell you what the tour won’t.
Who we are, plainly
Cream City CrossFit is the coached kind, and an unusual one: founded in 2010, member-owned cooperative since 2015. We don’t sell memberships to make a profit, the money we make goes back into the gym. Day to day that means nutrition coaching under one roof in Bay View. If you want solitude and headphones, we are honestly not your gym. Most people who walk through our door want someone to actually tell them what to do, because they don’t know where to start. If you want someone to guide you through the best hour of your day, with people who know your name, and help you get the results you came for, we might be.
Try one properly
Whatever gym you’re weighing, try it in person. Ours starts with a free No Sweat Intro — a conversation, a tour, and no obligation.
